A decade after the brutal 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic, claiming over 11,000 lives, the disease has once again made its way through as a serious public health threat. The outbreak was confirmed in May 2026 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)  and some confirmed cases in Uganda.

Unlike earlier outbreaks, the current wave is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or targeted antiviral treatment. Authorities formally declared the outbreak on May 15 following laboratory confirmation. Within weeks, infections crossed 1,000 confirmed cases and resulted in more than 250 deaths by initial June. While international agencies, including the WHO and CDC, have answered to the emergency swiftly, countries such as India have strengthened travel regulations to ensure safety and precaution.
